Term 3, Week 6, 28th August 2025
Principal's Message

Dear Parents, Carers, and Members of our School Community,
What a busy and exciting time it is here at our school!
Last week was an absolute blast with our Book Week Parade. It was wonderful to see all the creative costumes and the enthusiasm everyone had for celebrating books and reading. A big thank you to our teachers for organising such fantastic activities throughout the week, including Sarah Newson, who ran an amazing Book Fair!
This week, we extend a warm welcome to the newest members of our school community. Luka and Indigo have joined us in Stage 2, and Jayden has joined Stage 3. We are so happy to have you and your families with us and hope you feel right at home in our community.
Alariah and Tiana Weber recently represented the Tweed Region at the Diocesan Athletics Carnival in Coffs Harbour. Alariah earned an impressive third place in both of her events, securing her a spot to represent the Lismore Diocese at the Polding Carnival in Newcastle on September 12. Tiana also had a great day, placing ninth in shot put. Congratulations to both of these talented athletes! We are incredibly proud of your accomplishments!
We have a special week ahead as we celebrate the amazing dads and father figures in our community. Our annual Father's Day Breakfast and Liturgy will be held this coming Monday, and we can’t wait to catch up with so many of you. The Father's Day Stall will also be open on Monday and Tuesday, offering a chance for students to find a special gift. Each gift is $5.
Next week is a huge one for our older students, as our Stage 2 & 3 classes head to Brisbane! The students have been looking forward to this for a long time, and we know it will be an incredible experience filled with learning, adventure, and memory-making. A big thank you to the teachers who have worked so hard to organise this fantastic event.
Thank you all for your continued support. Have a wonderful week!
Warm regards,
Dave

LEARNING @ ST JOHN'S
Celebrating "Book Week- Book an Adventure" - A Week of Reading, Imagination, and Community!
What a magnificent week we've had celebrating Book Week - "Book an Adventure," our school's tribute to the joy and value of reading! From colourful costumes to thrilling scavenger hunts, from reading with preschoolers to purchasing books from the Book Fair, our students and staff truly embraced the theme and showed us just how much fun a book can be.
The highlight of the week, without a doubt, was our annual Book Parade. It was a spectacular display of creativity and passion as students transformed into their favourite literary characters. The effort and thought put into each costume were incredible, but even more special was seeing our students share the stories behind their characters, discussing why they connected with a particular book. This parade wasn't just about dressing up; it was a celebration of the unique worlds and ideas that books open up for us all.
Congratulations to the following students. We hope you enjoy using your Book Voucher at the Mullum Book Store. We thank them for their support of the Book Fair.

This year, we added an exciting twist to our celebrations with a school-wide QR code book scavenger hunt. Working in teams, students solved clues that led them to hidden QR codes scattered around the school. Scanning these codes took them on a digital adventure to the StoryBox Hub, where they listened to a selection of the Children's Book Council of Australia's shortlisted books, read by the authors themselves. It was a fantastic way to blend technology with traditional storytelling, encouraging teamwork and discovery while introducing students to some of the year's best new literature.
Our community's love for reading was also on full display through our Photo Competition, which definitely promoted the theme, ‘Book an Adventure’ with some very adventurous ‘Read Anywhere, Read Anytime’ photos. The submissions were a testament to the fact that a good book can be a companion wherever you are—on the bus, in a tree, in the principal’s office, in the bathroom or even with a pet! The photos were not only fun and creative but also served as a beautiful reminder that reading is a flexible, enjoyable activity that can fit into any part of our lives.
As we wrap up this wonderful week, let's carry the spirit of "Book an Adventure" forward. Here are some tips to help you continue fostering a love of reading at home and the incredible benefits of sharing a book with your child.
Tips for Encouraging Your Child to Read:
- Lead by example. Let your child see you reading for pleasure, whether it's a novel, a newspaper, or a magazine.
- Create a cozy reading nook. Designate a comfortable, quiet space in your home with good lighting where your child can relax and get lost in a book.
- Visit the library together. Make regular trips to the local library. Let your child choose their own books and explore different genres and topics.
- Make reading a routine. Carve out time for reading every day, even if it's just for 15 minutes before bed.
- Listen to audiobooks. Audiobooks are a great way to engage children with stories, especially on long car rides. It also helps with comprehension and vocabulary.
- Talk about books. Ask your child questions about what they're reading. Who is their favourite character? What do they think will happen next?
The Benefits of Reading with Your Child:
- It's a bonding experience. Reading together creates a special time for connection and snuggling, strengthening your relationship with your child.
- Improved language and vocabulary. Children are exposed to new words and sentence structures, which helps them develop stronger language skills.
- Enhanced imagination and creativity. Books introduce children to new worlds, ideas, and perspectives, sparking their imagination.
- Better concentration and focus. In a world of constant distractions, reading helps children learn to focus for longer periods.
- Development of empathy. By stepping into the shoes of different characters, children learn to understand and relate to the feelings and experiences of others.
Thank you to everyone—students, staff, and families—for making "Book an Adventure Book Week " a truly memorable and successful celebration. Let's keep turning pages and embarking on new adventures together!
Some of Book Week Highlights

WELLBEING
We are all faced with the challenges associated with raising children amidst the complexities of modern life. Come and join our parent community and learn together how to bring up kids who are ‘real-world ready kids’. Kids who can manage ordinary, everyday age-appropriate challenges. Kids who can find a balance between screen time and real-world play. Kids who can, with time and the right support, develop the capacity to tackle something new or challenging without shutting down or backing out.
Last year, we had a super well-attended and hugely successful parent evening with Angela Lockwood. This year, we’re looking forward to building the connection further and drawing on her skills and knowledge again to build the capacity of our community to raise resilient, focused, connected kids who will thrive in and out of school now and in the future.
Please click on the link in the flyer below to register your interest in coming along on the 22nd of October. We’d love to see as many parents as possible again this year.
Kind regards, Greg Flint
